Ultimate Sacrifice Memorial Guest Log
I am a 73 year old veteran, ex Flight Lieutenant of the now defunct Rhodesian Air Force. My respect, and reverence goes to all who made the supreme sacrifice in defense of what they believed.
Life, God knows, is little enough to loose. Yet young men think it so, and these were young. God bless them all, and permit them to rest in peace forever.
It makes me very proud to have such a monumental piece of World War II history so close to home. I consider myself a World War II history "buff" and have always been fascinated by the B-17. Many of my relatives fought in World War II, and I think this memorial, and others like it, is an excellent way to pay tribute to our "Greatest Generation" and the sacrifices they made to preserve our freedom.
Very good looking site. If you are looking for Veteran Groups, you can go to IALOH.org which is part of the Shrine of North America and made up of Veterans only. In turn, that can take you to the various Shrine centers that have Veterans that are on the web
I was in Europe during WW II and I have seen 1,000 B17s flying overhead. What a sight! Carl
Grandfather was a member of the 19th Bomb Group 93rd Squadron at Clark and Del Monte fields prior to surrender of P.I. I grew up around B-17 Texas Raiders when she was in Galveston. I love the B-17. I'm glad that an E model was found and restored. I hope to see her some day.
I crewed Yesterdays Airforce's B-17 "Memphis Belle" in the mid-nineties at east coast shows. Keep em flying.
I live in Blue Ash, OH, and have visited the hanger at the Blue Ash airport where the restoration is being done. Their handwork is outstanding and My Gal Sal will look as good as the day that it rolled of the assembly line! It will be a thing of beauty, that should be included in the Wright Patterson AFB shows.
It greatly warms my heart to see monumental projects such as yours take place! I consider myself to be an amateur WWII aviation historian (at least my family thinks so). I was stationed at Eileson AFB in Fairbanks Alaska in 1982. Just off the base there was a B-29 that had been dumped in a lake after it's landing gear had collapsed on landing ( ? ). I wish I had gotten pictures of it now. From what I can remember of it, it seemed to be in fairly decent shape at the time. Has anyone considered the possibility of recovering her for a possible memorial such as yours? I can't wait to come over there and see your work of love!! Darrell

Great work you are doing. I can't begin to imagine how much time and effort you have put into the restoration. Although I am only 16, I am a huge fan of B-17s. I can remember watching a display from the Sally B, the bomber used as the Memphis Belle for the film, and thinking, how can something so big be so graceful and beautiful. Keep up the good work. It is very important that people remember the sacrifices made for them during WW2
I fly a 12' rc B-17,as well as other warbirds, and I want to say THANK YOU to the men and women who made it possible for me to have the freedom to fly them on week-ends. We have giant warbird rallies so hopefully no one will forget.
My hat off to you all. Absolutely wonderful on what you have accomplished. As a B-17 fan, I marvel at the work being done and cannot wait to see this ship in one piece again. Thank You!
I really enjoyed your site. I love old airplanes. You should be commended for your efforts. I know it is a labor of love...I bookmarked your site and will follow along with you. Thanks
Congratulations and good luck with the restoration job on "My Gal Sal". Will be very nice to see it finished.
You are to be commended.
The best site I have ever seen. I felt the hard work you have done until now, but also the satisfaction. I am waiting for the rest of the photos. Keep going.
Great to see the progress you are making. I have been looking for a Fire Extinguisher panel for ages. How did you recreate it? Good luck with your project and cannot wait to see the wings on.
Thank You for your efforts to preserve our Heritage- especially as we, free people must yet again stand shoulder to shoulder against tyranny.... We shall gain the inevitable Victory!! Lest We forget. Bruce Colyear
I saw My Gal Sal several years ago at Tillamook and have pictures where she sat on the far side of the blimp hangar. Looking at her then, I would of never dreamed that she could be restored to what you magnificent people have done today! I am an Aircraft Structural Mechanic myself serving with the U. S. Coast Guard and have been a B-17 lover all my life. I would dearly love to have been part of this restoration. You have done an outstanding job. Congratulations to all of you on a job well done, like I said, I would of never thought it possible when I saw her last. Would dearly love to have a completed picture of her when your done so I can compare the pictures I have to what she'll look like when your finished!
Dear Bob, You gentlemen are doing an excellent job on the B17. I was telling Tom Griffin about your plans regarding the B25 and he wants to meet you sometime. As I said, he was navigator on plane #9 on the Doolittle raid. How many days a week do you work on the B17 ??? Vince
Thank you for this memorial. My dad flew 72 missions in the Pacific theatre, 5th AF, 71st squad., 38th BG - B-25's - 10/43 to 4/45. He'll be 80 in March.
My brother was killed in China on April 15,1945, while flying his P51 Mustang fighter. I have the highest regard for all the Air Corps men of WW2. They will all share a special place in Heaven! What a great thing to do, to restore the My Gal Sal B17. Good Luck! Don Eisenman
Great site! Always excellent to have yet another warbird restored for future generations to experience. Have a look at my web site dedicated to Avro Lancaster KB882. Our lancaster has a documented war record with 12 bombing raids over Nazi occupied Europe and served with the RCAF performing photo recon & photo mapping in the Far North from 1952-1964. Keep up the good work.
It's great to see another warbird restoration, keep up the good work.
I am 29 years old and have had the opportunity to fly a B17G Flying Fortress. It was the most awesome experience I have ever had. Awesome web site!!!!!!!!
Nice
I am very gratefull to be an american and to live in a country where these brave souls fought for our freedom. I am looking for a place or a web site so I can ride in a B17
Thank you so much for restoring this beautiful piece of history! Her legacy will serve to educate & enlighten generations to come about the sacrifices so many made for our great nation. I couldn't get enough of the progress photos. What an amazing job you are doing! God bless. -Mike
I will be out to see "My Gal Sal" this coming week with a local gent of yours named: Mr. James COBB!
Russ Schulz
Is this plane connected to the p-38 that was rescued from the same place?
We appreciate what is being done on behalf of those who served and the rest of us who remember a bit about WW II but were too young to be involved. Has to help the succeeding generations appreciate at least in some small way what was done to preserve the country and freedoms they now enjoy. In case our name rings a bell faintly with Mr. Ready, we were a part of his company several years ago. Sincerely, G.Herrmann
This is my father and he would love to hear from some of his old buddies, he is not sure if any of them are alive.
My dad, Charles "Chuck" Lawrence was a bombardier on a 17 stationed in England. I believe that the name of their plane was GOOD TO THE LAST DROP. God Bless to all those great men whose sacrifices have helped create this great nation! I will assure you great soldiers that your legacy will continue by telling my 10 year old son of these heroes from WWII. Peace to all.
Visited Tillamook Naval Air Hanger, a memorable and excellent museum, several years ago. So happy to hear that you are restoring the B-17. Hope to see it in Cincinnati someday. Thanks for your efforts.
My grandfather is C.B. Chapman. He was one of the men on the B-17. The "My Gal Sal". I was so happy to hear about this and I am planning a trip to see it. I have been told the story about the plane crash for years. That is about all we heard growing up. He died several years ago and I have looked for life magazines with the article in it. I will see you when I come to visit.
That restoration is INCREDIBLE! I flew in Sentimental Journey this summer and what a treat. What you're doing out there makes my heart jump. I wish I lived by you to help. Best wishes and thanks for keeping the history ALIVE! - Greg
Hello, I hope the volunteers enjoyed the B-17 video I put together for them. If there is anything else I can do, please let me know. Dennis Stewart
My Uncle Bob Patrick was on the plane the day it crashed, as you know. I'm glad he lived to tell about it. I am also glad that the plane is being restored. I look forward to seeing it the next time I'm home in Ohio. I couldn't make it to the summer dedication/birthday party. Keep on going. I know it will be worth it to you, also. Thanks again, Craig Patrick
Great work! A fitting memorial for these fighters for freedom.
I have been reading the articles about this project. My father was in the army air corps in WW II and was stationed at Presque Isle for a while. He was a navigator but not sure what size plane. I have some mementos that are related to his service that may be of interest. Would someone email me about this.
I visited My Gal Sal 10-18-2001 with the 97th. Bomb Group "boys". I was amazed at what had gone on in those hangars at Blue Ash, Ohio. Thanks guys for all the dedication and hard work to restore a very important war bird. Keep up the good work.
You might know me as Craig Braunschweiger's son. I think that what Mr.Ready is doing is great. I know how many young airmen faced death in the skies. They deserve a memorial.
Hi, I heard something of your site and work from Larry Koehl. Larry and I taught in the same department at the Northern KY Tech School. I have known a few planes from my ten years in the Air Force. What you are doing is great. Hoping you will take a look at my site. I worked the white pages hard and found many of my friends from the weather station on Eniwetok in the Pacific Atomic Testing Grounds. Nearly half century had gone by with no contact. Now we have a site where we can share tales and a roster to show contact info. You will like some of the mail from Eskridge, (just click on the 'Mail Box'). There is a good bit of reading in the Archives as well as the recent articles clickable on the home page.

AWESOME. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT COMPLETED. GOOD LUCK
I was a B-17 crew member/gunner in the 15th Air Force during the war and have always loved the B-17. I had the honor of visiting your site last week and saw what you had accomplished so far. A wonderful job. Hope to return when the memorial is finished. Keep up the good work.
I love the B-17. Nice website.
What a wonderful site. It is long past the time to honor those who kept the world intact. It seems we may be facing the same times our parents and grandparents lived through, with the time of our children's lives.
God Bless our men in uniform and the USA.
I am thankful for the men and women of my parent's generation and remain awestruck and unworthy of the strength and courage with which they were endowed in defense of not only our country but the world.
We are forever in your debt.
Thanks to all of you who have given your time & money to historically immortalize these planes and men. God bless, Pat Cain
I was control tower operator at Bluie West 8 from 6/42 to 2/44. Well remember the ice cap episodes. Col Bernt Balchen who led the rescue teams was the base commander. Flew quite a few hours with him on supply drops in a PBY-5A and a Nordyn Norseman. Will be following your project with much interest. Lived in Cincinnati area 42 years. At present time volunteer one day a week at March Air Museum. Presently working on Mig 19, Mig 23 and Russian AN-2. Will keep in touch. Chuck Fisher, 40381 Via Siena Murietta, CA 92562
The progress you have all made on this project is amazing. It's going to be great to have a restored B-17E. Good luck on the work to come. Andy
My dad flew B-17's & was stationed in England. Unfortunately he died 15 years ago & took with him many stories that we'll never know. He flew most of his missions over Germany. I know this is like looking for a needle in a haystack, but would anyone out there remember him? His name was Lloyd (Bo)Ricks & he was from Starkville, Mississippi. E-mail me at Bgalla55@aol.com. Thanks for a great website.
This is something that should have been done a long time ago.
I greatly enjoyed your web page. Continued success with your restoration projects and with adding more interesting info to this site.
Mike
I would like to know more about this effort. My father-in-law, was a crew chief on an B17. He was born in Germany, moved to the United States at age 8. Grew up to join the war effort and became a B17 Crew Chief, bombing his old home land. I would love for him to see this while he still can. His name is Walter Hoecker, he is 83 years old. This would lift his life. He would love to hear from anybody that may know him.
Please email me at, "tbc2llc@aol.com" I will pass along any information to him and send along his thoughts and memories. Please let me know when it would be possible for him to visit. I can't imagine the emotions this will bring back, but being a Vet myself, I know it would be good for him.
Thank you for this wonderful site, story and effort. Terry and Linda Conley West Chester Ohio
This is a fantastic restoration project and appears to be progressing impressively. Keep up the good work "ULTIMATE SACRICICE CREW" Ron Bennett
Very interesting and informative
A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME ABOUT YOUR PROJECT AND WEB SITE. MY FATHER WAS A BALL TURRET GUNNER DURING THE WAR, SO B17'S HAVE ALWAYS HELD A FASCINATION WITH ME. I'VE NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO THRU A B17, BUT ONE OF THESE DAYS I HAVE TO DO IT. IF YOU DON'T MIND, ONE OF THESE DAYS MAYBE I'LL MAKE A ROAD TRIP TO SEE YOUR RESTORATION. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GREG
Hi Guys
Good luck on the restoration. I am a 20 year veteran of the USAF (1964-1984). Assigned C-130 units deployed in Asia and Vietnam for the first 12 years. The B-17 is a great airplane. You are restoring History.
Jim Msgt USAF Retired
This was awesome!
Mind-boggling! As one who has been following the progress of the recovery and restoration of the P-38 from under the ice of Eastern Greenland since 1982, I am amazed every time I visit this site and see what you have accomplished in so very short a time. My hat's off to all of you. There are no words to express what we admirers of '17s feel when seeing the plane come back to life. Keep up the good work!
I have eagerly followed the progress of the restoration of "My Gal Sal" by corresponding with survivors of the event, museum volunteer workers and Navy Lt. Aram Parunak, the USCG pilot, who together with Col. Bernt Balchen, rescued the "My Gal Sal" crew. From Oct. 1941 thru Sept 1942 I was a radio officer at Bluie West Eight Greenland, the first US airbase established above the Arctic Circle under command of Col Bernt Balchen. BW8 played a major role during the ice-cap rescues during June - August 1942. Bob Ready and staff are commended for the new, outstanding web-site as a monumental tribute to the memory of this extraordinary event. Looking forward to visiting the project when completed. astavros @optonline.net
What a wonderful project. I wish I could help with it. I am a member of the Confederate Air Force, Arizona Wing and try to help with our B-17, Sentemental Journey and the other aircraft in the hanger. (Retired TWA Pilot)
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
This restoration brings back many memories to me. I was an engineering officer in the 368th Bomb Squadron 306th Bomb Group 1st Division of the Eighth Air Force. In particular, I was on detached service when "My Gal Sal" went down. At that time I was stationed in Prestwick Scotland and I was the maintenance officer (titled engineering officer). My function was to refuel, repair if necessary and send them on to their bases. There were three officers there. Col Anderson (later General Anderson operations officer 8th Airforce) Captain Hennin and me Second Lt. William (Bill) Widlansky. In addition to the maintenance function I was assigned coordination with the RAF for supplies as well as billeting and mess assignments. At present, I am a pensioner from the General Electric Company, who is back at work as a design Engineer. Not bad for an 84 year old. Lot more, but I'll leave room for someone else.
I AM A FRIEND OF MR. BUD GOLEM'S, I WORK FOR WRIGHT-PATT CREDIT UNION ON WPAFB AREA C. HE IS A VERY DEAR PERSON TO ME AND HE KEEPS ME UPDATED ON "MY GAL SAL" HE KNOWS THAT MY HUSBAND IS A BIG HISTORY BUFF..GOD BLESS AMERICA.....TISA....:)
